Running head: AFFIRMATIVE ACTION Affirmative Action Liberty University’s Distance Learning Abstract Affirmative action is a law that was passed in the early 1960’s and which has been exercised throughout the world for decades upon decades. This law has been recognized to â€Å"attempt to get rid of discrimination against minorities, and women in America† Affirmative action also known as A.A. began as a plan to equalize the educational, employment, and contracting opportunities for minorities, and women with opportunities given to their white, male counterparts.† (U.S. history.com) A.A. is also considered the set of public policies and initiatives designed to help eliminate past†¦show more content†¦1. History on Higher Education What is Affirmative Action? As defined earlier Affirmative action is defined as: â€Å"an active effort to improve the employment or educational opportunities of members of minority groups and women.† According to Merriam-Webster dictionary. This law was put in to effect to keep employment agencies from rejecting a person for a job due the their age, race or gender. Under the American Association for Affirmative Action, â€Å"Banning discrimination was not enough, however, to overcome the continuing barriers to equal opportunity† (American Association for Affirmative Action, n.d.) In 1965 at Howard University, President Johnson gave a speech where he addressed the topic of Affirmative Action stating: â€Å"You do not wipe away the scars of centuries by saying: Now you are free to go where you want and do as you desire, and choose the leaders you please.
